Aquarium Keeping
Aquarium Keeping is a favorite hobby among many individuals especially among children. If you are fond of little moving creatures like fish and watch them play, feed and grow, then aquarium keeping is a wonderful option. You can watch them grow from the comforts of your living room.

Aquarium keeping as a hobby is fast increasing. Many young enthusiasts have taken up this hobby. Not only does an aquarium beautify your drawing room but at the same time can be your best companion. Staying in a big city or town at times deprives you of nature. An aquarium at home helps in bringing nature close to you. However, you must have the correct knowledge of aquarium keeping or else your fish might not stay healthy enough for a long time.
Temperature: The temperature of the water is extremely important. Most tropical aquariums do best with temperatures ranging from 23 to 28 degrees Celsius (73-82 degrees Fahrenheit).
Lighting: The type pf lighting depends upon the kind of animals you keep. Aquarium lights with color temperatures ranging between 5,000 to 7,000 degrees Kelvin give wonderful colors to a marine system.
Filtration: Filtration is important for aquarium keeping. There are three types of filtration- mechanical, chemical and biological. A good combination of all three types of filtration is a must.
Points to remember:
- When adding water remember to dechlorinate or else the existing fish may die due to suffocation.
- If you can, avoid buying the tank and the fish at the same time. First set up your aquarium at home and then give it a week’s time before adding the fish.
- Ensure three basic filtration methods have been used.
- Change your water regularly to ensure good water quality.
- It is better to have quality fish than increasing the quantity.
- Get compatible fish which would be adaptable to the same temperature and have approximately the same adult size and prefer similar water conditions. Don't get fish that are likely eat all their tank mates.
Don’t overfeed your fish. Feed the fish no more than what they can consume in five minutes.
