History
Stamp collection is a great hobby whose history can be traced back to 1840 when the first postage stamp was issued by Great Britain. Stamp collection or philately was first coined by George Herpin of France in 1864. It came from a Greek word where ‘philos’ mean liking for and ‘ateleia’ meaning tax-free. The first stamp featured the picture of Queen Victoria and was in use from May 1, 1840 to May 6. New York, Brazil and Swiss cantons Zurich and Geneva followed suit. In 1837, Rowland Hill considered to be the Father of philately, first advocated the system of prepayment of postage and uniform domestic rates by weight. The first stamp of India appeared in 1852.
